Non-profit OpenAI now wants to give profit a go

Hours after OpenAI co-founder Mira Murati announced her surprise resignation, Reuters reports that OpenAI is moving forward with its plan to restructure itself from a non-profit to a very-much-for-profit company. The plan would wrest control of the company from the non-profit’s board, with which CEO Sam Altman has had a rocky relationship.

Altman stands to land a chunk of equity in the company—which makes ChatGPT— in the restructuring, according to the report.

OpenAI said that a non-profit entity would remain part of the new structure.
