SoftBank will buy $1.5 billion in OpenAI shares
OpenAI will allow employees to sell $1.5 billion worth of shares to SoftBank in a new tender offer first reported by CNBC.
SoftBank already invested $500 million into OpenAI’s last funding round and was reportedly looking for a way to secure a larger stake. Employees will reportedly have until Dec. 24 to decide if they want to sell their shares.
OpenAI, the tech startup behind gen-AI chatbot ChatGPT, has been flushed with cash in 2019 and it now boasts a valuation of $157 billion. The deal with SoftBank gives employees an opportunity to liquidate their stock, which has exploded in value since 2019.
OpenAI now has 4,462 employees, according to employee contact database RocketReach. According to an investor pitch for its most recent fundraise, OpenAI paid out $1.5 billion in stock compensation just in the first half of 2024.
