Woof: Petco’s down 25% after posting worse-than-expected sales
Petco might have to cut back on those free little dog treats at checkout.
The hamster seller reported worse-than-expected earnings after the bell on Thursday, and its shares are down 25% in Thursday afternoon trading. Its shares are down 34% so far this year.
Petco posted a same-store sales decline of 1.3%, about twice as bad as the 0.6% drop analysts had penciled in. Net sales in its consumables category (food and treats) declined 2% year over year.
The company expects full-year sales to fall in the low single digits. Petco also bumped up the value of its tariff-exposed goods imported from China, Canada, and Mexico from 5% of the total value of its sold merchandise to 7%.
In late May, Bank of America analysts flagged that US spending at pet stores was down roughly 4% year on year as of April.
