Tesla cancels its cheap car

Elon Musk’s long-promised mass-market car is no more, Reuters reports.

For years, Musk has been telling investors that the company would use its luxury models — the cheapest Tesla starts at $39,000 and models go well over $100,000 — to finance a “low cost family car.”

But now the company faces a lot more competition from low-cost EV makers, including China’s BYD, and Reuters’ sources say Tesla is pivoting to robotaxis.

In other words, Tesla took too long and now has to try something else instead. FWIW, Musk says that Reuters — not the guy who constantly goes back on his word — is lying.
