Moderna rallies on $590 million bird flu vax grant
Moderna shot up about 7% on Tuesday morning after outgoing Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra announced a $590 million grant to the company to develop a bird flu vaccine.
While bird flu used to be more of a concern for agriculture, human cases are on the rise. As of January 6, there have been 66 confirmed human cases of bird flu and at least one death, according to HHS.
Moderna, which was previously awarded funds from HHS to develop a Covid vaccine, has struggled to keep up its pandemic-era revenue levels.
Notably, Moderna is enjoying a vaccine-related bump on the first trading day of President Donald Trump’s second term. Trump has nominated Robert F. Kennedy, a staunch vaccine skeptic who is hostile to the pharmaceutical industry, to be the next head of HHS.
