Amid close calls and safety concerns, Southwest adds runway cockpit warnings to almost all of its jets
With customer safety concerns, airline complaints about air traffic control tech, and numerous close calls on runways at US airports in recent years, Southwest Airlines has reportedly added a new alert system for pilots.
Designed by Honeywell, the system works like blind spot or lane drift warnings in modern cars, alerting pilots to a variety of risk factors like speed and altitude.
Southwest said it has installed the system in almost all of its roughly 800 commercial planes.
Some Southwest rivals including Alaska Air have also added the Honeywell alerts, while manufacturers Boeing and Airbus are reportedly working on proprietary systems.
