TikTok knew it harmed teens, lawsuit reveals
A poorly redacted document in a multistate lawsuit against TikTok reveals that company executives are well aware of many harms their addictive app can inflict on teens.
NPR reporters were able to view the documents, which were recently sealed by the court.
Among the alarming revelations:
- An investigation by TikTok itself found “a significant” number adults were messaging underage teens about stripping, and sending gifts of virtual currency.
- TikTok’s research found that young children were easily addicted to the app. “The younger the user, the better the performance,” the report said.
- TikTok’s algorithm was adjusted to remove content featuring “not attractive subjects,” and it promoted content featuring subjects it considered beautiful.
