Nvidia’s chips could be banned in China for not meeting new energy standards

China’s new energy regulations for advanced chips could spell trouble for Nvidia. New Chinese energy efficiency rules would ban Nvidia’s popular Chinese-market H20 GPU, which is a vastly underpowered chip compared to the H100 that tech companies have been hoarding.

The Financial Times reports that the restrictions are part of an effort to reduce Chinese dependence on foreign AI technology and hardware. Nvidia did $17 billion worth of sales in China in fiscal year 2025.

Nvidia’s stock was down nearly 6% against a wider tech sell-off.
