AI is good for Meta’s workers, for now
For the first time in almost two years, Meta’s head count grew year over year. The company now has 72,404 employees, the most since the second quarter of 2023.
The head-count growth was “primarily driven by hiring in our priority areas of monetization, infrastructure, Reality Labs, generative AI, as well as regulation and compliance,” Meta CFO Susan Li said in an earnings call.
Meta’s head count peaked at more than 87,000 in the third quarter of 2022. Soon after that, Mark Zuckerberg declared “the year of efficiency,” and Meta had a few rounds of layoffs, including two cuts of greater than 10,000 employees in November 2022 and March 2023. Most recently, Meta laid off employees in various departments, including WhatsApp, Reality Lab, and Instagram.
