Apple has responded to Tesla and xAI CEO Elon Musk’s unsubstantiated assertion that the iPhone maker is favoring partner OpenAI in its App Store.
In a statement to Bloomberg, Apple said the App Store “is designed to be fair and free of bias.”
“We feature thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations and curated lists selected by experts using objective criteria,” a spokesperson said. “Our goal is to offer safe discovery for users and valuable opportunities for developers, collaborating with many to increase app visibility in rapidly evolving categories.”
Today, xAI’s Grok has moved down to the sixth-most-popular free app in the App Store from No. 5, having been replaced by school communication app ParentSquare as the new school year begins. OpenAI’s ChatGPT is still No. 1.
Separately, a federal judge has ordered Musk to court next year over OpenAI’s allegations that his legal and media attacks are part of a “years-long harassment campaign.”
