After more than a decade as a mobile-only app, the little ghost is coming for your laptop. - __Snapchat for Web__ will initially be available only to subscribers of Snapchat+, its new $4/month subscription. And only in the US and some other English-speaking countries.
- __Do less:__ The site will launch as a stripped-down version of the app, focused on chats and video calls (no Stories yet). Snap says its average caller spends 30 minutes/day on calls.

__Feeling ghosted...__ by investors. Snap stock is down 70% this year after it said it would miss its earnings guidance for its latest quarter (FYI: it reports Thursday). In May, Snap [warned](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/1EzhZ46qpAaHVRxvK5GHKD/articles/4rTFcuUN3cezdd8ZYULeg1/) of slowing growth. Now it's trying to spark engagement with its core user base:

- __Save the Snap streak:__ Snap [says](https://investor.snap.com/overview/default.aspx) it’s used by more than three-quarters of 13- to 34-year-olds in key markets, like the US and UK. These Gen Z’ers and millennials will be more likely to Snap between classes and __[Zoom](https://robinhood.com/stocks/ZM)__ meetings. 
- __Case in point:__ Snap’s web offering features a privacy screen that hides the Snap window when you toggle away for another task (think: Excel when your boss walks by).

__The side-tab economy has intensified…__ since the rise of WFH. The side-tab economy = everything you do on your desktop between __[Google](https://robinhood.com/stocks/GOOGL)__ Meets, classes, and deadlines — from bathing-suit shopping to __[Twitter](https://robinhood.com/stocks/TWTR)__ scrolling. Snap wants to be a tab you always have open during your workday. And its biggest rivals, __TikTok__ and Insta, already have web offerings.

__McMutiny…__ __[McDonald’s](https://robinhood.com/stocks/MCD)__ franchise owners are not lovin’ Chris: in a recent survey, 87% of McD’s restaurant owners [indicated](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/18/mcdonalds-franchise-owners-back-no-confidence-vote-on-ceo-survey-says.html) they disapprove of CEO Chris Kempczinski. That’s not ideal, since franchisees own 95% of the nearly 14K McDonald’s restaurants in the US. Two years ago, there was a [turf war](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/3W2qDBQC1zd66GBLGKcPH5/articles/6HVDpykBMdbjucEqIYnyUg/) over Happy Meals. Now there’s fresh beef:

- __McDynasty:__ Last summer, McD’s added new fees for passing on franchise licenses to family members. Burger heirs now have to pay fees to inherit Golden Arches from their parents.
- __Two sides of the same patty:__ McD’s says it’s trying to expand franchisee diversity. The chain plans to offer $250M in loans to boost ownership diversity (FYI: it [costs](https://www.wsj.com/articles/mcdonalds-tightens-restaurant-ownership-rules-as-it-looks-for-new-franchisees-11656010130) at least $1.4M to open a McD’s). But owners say the new rules are just an excuse for corporate to charge higher fees and mandate costly training.

__Nuggets of success…__ The franchise model usually benefits both sides: companies make big bucks renting out real estate, brand IP, and deep fryers, while owners profit from beloved chains. Subway, Dunkin, and __[Marriott](https://robinhood.com/stocks/MAR)__ are all heavily franchised. But during the pandemic tensions between franchisees and their corporate overlords rose as companies imposed new rules and demanded higher fees.

__Franchises are symbiotic relationships…__ but inflation and other stresses can throw off their balance. McD’s scaled into the world’s largest burger chain thanks to its franchisees. In return, franchisees got a taste of McD’s fame — and profits. But new rules are alienating franchisees, which could hurt business. Last year, the number of McD’s owners who sold their franchises boomed, and the number of US McD’s locations has fallen since 2019.

On Friday, the struggling streamer was briefly [down](https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/netflix-down-for-thousands-of-users-report-3162705) for some users — putting shows like "The Umbrella Academy" and "How to Build a Sex Room" out of reach. But downtime isn't the Flix's only problem: the stock's down 70% this year as subscriptions sag and revenue growth slows.

- __Skip intro:__ Probably what Netflix wishes it could do with quarterly earnings, which it reports tomorrow. If first-quarter results are any indication, things aren't going well.
- __Sub-pocalypse:__ Netflix *lost* 200K subscribers when it was [expected](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/1hJKveGEOmvpzuLtfVejiF/articles/43M2Oild3MGMPYMecA8Q7K/) to add 2.5M. Blame post-lockdown #subscripturation.
- __Next episode:__ Netflix [said](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2022-07-13/lat-et-ct-netflix-ads-microsoft) it expected to lose 2M subscribers in the second quarter (aka: the one it reports tomorrow). __Stranger things’ve happened...__ In 2019, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said his streamer would never do ads, “period.” Now: Netflix is doing ads. In April, it [announced](https://about.netflix.com/en/news/netflix-partners-with-microsoft) it would launch a cheaper ad tier. The goal: attract and retain subs. High prices (#flation) + subscription overload (#subscripuration) have made it harder for consumers to afford multiple streamers.

- __Soft landing:__ Last week Netflix said it was [partnering](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/13/netflix-partners-with-microsoft-on-ad-supported-subscription-plan.html) with __[Microsoft](https://robinhood.com/stocks/MSFT/)__ to build out ads. Microsoft's ad biz isn't as big as that of its rivals, like __[Google](https://robinhood.com/stocks/GOOGL)__ and __[Comcast](https://robinhood.com/stocks/CMCSA/)__, but it's one of the few big techies without streaming ties.

__To keep your identity, you may have to lose it…__ To maintain its rep as the #1 streamer famous for original content hits, Netflix must do something we thought it never would: Hulu-fy itself with ads. After its first subscriber loss in a decade, Netflix had to choose between cutting down on content spending or cutting the cost of its service. Ads could be a big profit puppy, but might cost Netflix its frictionless prestige.

Investors have ditched euros as comparatively higher US interest rates strengthen the $, while Russia’s war on Ukraine darkens Europe’s growth outlook. It’s good for American tourists (think: cheaper paella and prosecco): 7X more Americans are taking Eurotrips this year. But a strong dollar makes US exports more expensive (think: pricier Pop-Tarts), which could dampen spending and investing from abroad.

__Crypto regulators...__ mount up. After __Celsius'__ collapse and __TerraUSD's__ [implosion](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/CZLtSSO02dkWUNfYSsz7D/articles/40vJyepmLGsyVSkxrAJx2M/), regulators are speaking up. The Fed's vice chair said it's time to establish clear rules for what's permitted in crypto, and both the European Central Bank and the Financial Stability Board (a global regulator) called for stablecoin regs. Meanwhile, the US Treasury's asking for public comment on crypto's risks as it preps a report for President Biden. And as retail investors continue to feel crypto winter's chill, regulatory pressure will likely keep heating up.

To ramp up output, Tesla’s upgrading its Berlin and Shanghai factories — but that’ll halt production at the major plants for weeks. Analysts expect quarter-over-quarter sales growth for the 136-year-old company, which has become more associated with vaccines than Tylenol and Band-Aids. J&J had forecast up to $3.5B in vax sales this year, but walked that back as demand for shots sagged. Now health officials are pushing booster shots to combat the "worst version" of the virus, and US Covid hospitalizations are on the rise — nearing 6K a day.

That third-party data lets Amazon peek at rivals’ sales patterns, which regulators say helps it get ahead of competitors with products like Basics. If accepted, Amazon's settlement would apply only to its EU biz. __Amazon may be too dominant to fail…__ The Zon is no stranger to scandal, from worker-treatment controversies to privacy issues. It just disclosed that it [shares](https://www.politico.com/news/2022/07/13/amazon-gave-ring-videos-to-police-without-owners-permission-00045513) Ring video footage with police without owners’ permission. And a recent study found that its warehouse workers [suffer](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/04/12/study-amazon-workers-suffer-serious-injuries-at-twice-rate-of-rivals.html) serious injuries at twice the rate of its rivals. But as Prime Day shows, Amazon seems to have the scale and pricing power to stay on top.

__Time to plan that Eurotrip...__ Yesterday, one euro was [worth](https://www.wsj.com/articles/euros-slide-below-dollar-reflects-europes-sinking-economic-fortunes-11657805525?mod=markets_lead_pos1) exactly one US dollar, and briefly *less* than the USD. The euro had been more valuable than the dollar for two decades (almost its entire existence). But the currency has lost more than a tenth of its value this year, while the dollar has *appreciated* relative to other top currencies. What’s driving it:

- __Higher interest:__ Investors have ditched euros as comparatively higher interest rates in the US strengthen the dollar (higher interest = $$ is more expensive to borrow).  
- __Higher growth:__ The euro selloff continued last week as Russia threatened to cut Germany’s gas supply, hurting Europe’s economy. While the US’s economic growth outlook isn’t great, Europe’s is worse.
- __Higher confidence:__ The USD’s stable rep has long made it the world's reserve currency for international purchases, and demand is climbing.  

__Cheaper chianti in Kansas…__ pricier Pop-Tarts in Palermo. The euro’s drop has global implications. The discounted euro makes it cheaper for Americans to frolic around Rome and Paris ($1 buys you more euros). But it makes it pricier for Europeans to import US products — and less lucrative for Italians to export their prosciutto. A stronger dollar makes investing outside the US less appealing to Americans, since returns in other currencies translate to fewer $$.

__Being too strong can be a weakness…__ A strong dollar’s great for Aperol-spritz-sipping Americans abroad. But if the dollar keeps appreciating, US investment and exports could dip as global investors get priced out. American corporate earnings could also suffer, since 40% of S&P 500 revenue comes from abroad. Some analysts expect the euro to lose another tenth of its value before stabilizing.

__Price-a-Roni…__ the super-costly treat. June inflation numbers are turning heads. US consumer prices spiked 9.1% last month from June of last year — the fastest pace of inflation since 1981, and worse than economists expected. It's not just gas prices that have Americans couch-cushion-diving for spare change:

- __Fettu-spendy:__ Staples like rice, pasta, and cornmeal were up 14% year over year.
- __Flossy:__ Dental care shot up nearly 2% month over month, the largest monthly bump ever.
- __Fleeced:__ Rent prices jumped 0.8% from May to June, the largest monthly spike since 1986.
- __Air pain:__ Airfare dropped 1.8% for the month, but was up 34% year over year.

__Tell me somethin’ I don’t know…__ Americans have been feeling the squeeze for a while, but June’s #s are a big blow to already fraying wallets. Wage hikes aren’t keeping up: inflation-adjusted incomes were *down* 1% over the month. For many, there's not much budget wiggle room: people are eating into their savings and racking up debt to keep up with bills.

__Inflation has some stubborn spots…__ Americans are getting tired of hearing “inflation may have peaked,” especially after last month’s report. But *this* month, prices for inflation drivers like gas, corn, and metals have been falling. Still, stubborn staples like groceries aren’t showing many signs of easing. Now the Fed might raise interest rates by as much as 1 percentage point — up from previous expectations of a 0.75 hike.

June’s bummer inflation report highlights the American pinch, but experts hope the worst is over

__Dustin’ off the passport…__ and savin’ the free peanuts. __[Delta](https://robinhood.com/stocks/DAL)__ [flew home](https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/13/business/delta-earnings/index.html) a $735M profit last quarter, the biggest since the pandemic began. Packed planes, ludicrous fares, and Delta's oil refinery drove sales up 10% from 2019 — surpassing pre-pandemic levels for the first time. But investors weren’t impressed: Delta shares fell 5% yesterday, and __[United](https://robinhood.com/stocks/UAL)__ and __[American](https://robinhood.com/stocks/AAL)__ dropped ahead of their reports next week. Still, things are looking up:

- __Corporate comeback:__ Delta's lucrative US business travel recovered to 80% of pre-pandemic levels, and it expects an even bigger corporate [rebound](https://skift.com/2022/07/13/delta-expects-big-return-of-business-travelers-this-fall-recession-or-not/) this fall.
- __Vacation vengeance:__ More than half of Americans planned to book a summer vacay, even with ticket [prices](https://www.npr.org/2022/06/16/1105323610/flight-tickets-inflation-pandemic-revenge-travel-vacation-europe-recession) up 35% from last year.

__3-hour flight…__ 8-hour layover. It's been a tumultuous summer for fliers as they battle hours-long TSA lines and endless delays and cancellations. Airlines took on packed flight schedules to make up for years of slowing revenue. But instead, fuel costs and labor have led to more canceled flights so far this year than all of 2021. Now Delta’s slowing flight growth to avoid more disruptions.

- __Flight fatigue:__ Delta pilots have been on strike after working more overtime than in 2018 and 2019 combined. Now Delta’s spending an [extra](https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/delta-posts-735-million-profit-sees-strong-revenue-86730301) $700M to stay staffed up.

__Travel-pocalypse hasn’t hit the bottom line…__ it may’ve even helped. You’d think all the delay and cancellation headaches would hurt airlines, but they’re just driving up seat prices. Case in point: American (the world’s largest airline) predicted a 12% jump in June revenue from three years ago. Airlines could return to full profitability next year.

__Hour-long Backstreet Boys ride...__ all uphill. __[Peloton](https://robinhood.com/stocks/PTON)__ has been on the struggle bus this year. In January it [paused](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/2aaB9GnrWgVHhjJd7bFJu/articles/1cvFtVr0b2fj1m1iC9AgUW/) production of its pricey fitness equipment as unsold spin bikes and treadmills piled up. Now the money-losing company will [outsource](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/12/peloton-to-outsource-all-manufacturing-as-part-of-its-turnaround-efforts.html) all its manufacturing:

- __Spinning out:__ Peloton's Taiwanese partner, __Rexon Industrial__, will become the primary manufacturer of its bikes and treads, to save Peloton money on expensive US production. In February, Peloton scrapped plans for a $400M Ohio factory.
- __Reverse, reverse:__ Mid-pandemic, Peloton spent hundreds of millions to build up in-house US manufacturing. The goal: avoid overseas-shipping snags. The assumption: pandemic-fueled demand would stay high for years (spoiler: it didn't).

__Waited so long for the P-ton...__ that your shipping address is outdated. Peloton’s sales [boomed](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/2FM1iMyeVeUcmesr5FeXMu/articles/1AzQxmgq3tbqbN9ybVg8oS/) in 2020 as its $2.2K spin bikes rode off shelves. *Then things took a turn for the worse:* equipment sales have plunged 40% from a year ago, and Peloton notched its biggest quarterly loss as a public company in May. Wild stat: the value of unsold equipment has surged to $1.4B, up from just $19M two years ago. Peloton was worth $50B at its height, but its market cap has plunged to $3B.

__Pricey hardware is hard to bear…__ Owning several steps of production works for behemoths like __[Apple](https://robinhood.com/stocks/AAPL)__, __[Amazon](https://robinhood.com/stocks/AMZN)__, and __[Tesla](https://robinhood.com/stocks/TSLA)__, whose scale makes relying on third-party manufacturers untenable. But for strugglers like Peloton, making hardware in house can be financially unsustainable. That’s why Peloton’s new CEO is [pivoting](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/12/peloton-to-outsource-all-manufacturing-as-part-of-its-turnaround-efforts.html) it to be a subscription-focused company (not an equipment maker). Peloton has slashed hardware prices while hiking monthly subs from $39 to $44.

__Off the rack…__ __[Gap](https://robinhood.com/stocks/GPS)__ shocked investors yesterday by replacing CEO Sonia Syngal barely two years after hiring her for the top job (exec chairman Bob Martin will be interim chief). Shares of the ’90s hoodie legend [sank](https://robinhood.com/stocks/GPS) 5% after news of Syngal’s departure — and they’ve lost over half their value this year.

- __Investors praised Syngal__ for quickly adopting pandemic trends like curb-side pickup and online options, but it wasn’t enough to offset slowing sales. 
- __Gap posted a $162M loss__ last quarter (compared to a $166M profit a year before) as late-arriving shipments made it harder to keep up with fast-fashion trends.

__Wayyy-too-oversized hoodie…__ Over half of Gap's sales [come](https://www.wsj.com/articles/gap-inc-says-ceo-sonia-syngal-is-stepping-down-11657572509) from its Old Navy stores. Last summer, Old Navy execs ordered a wide range of clothing sizes to promote inclusivity and boost sales. But it backfired: too many XXS and XXL and not enough midrange sizes sparked a nearly 20% sales [drop](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/gap-ceo-becomes-latest-exec-to-depart-struggling-retailer-220523825.html) last quarter. __Cancel order...__ Easy for pizza. Harder when your order is a $44B merger with a public company. In case you've been living under a __SpaceX__ rocket: Elon Musk is [backing out](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/jul/08/elon-musk-buy-twitter-withdraw) of his bid to buy __[Twitter](https://robinhood.com/stocks/TWTR/)__ — or at least he's trying to. A quick timeline of the saga:

- __Mid-April:__ After becoming Twitter's largest shareholder with a 9% stake, Elon offers to buy the rest of Twitter's shares at a 38% premium to their price.
- __Late April:__ After a few weeks of "omg Elon wants to buy Twitter I'm so sad/happy" drama, Musk reaches a deal to buy Twitter for $44B. 
- __Early May:__ Musk announces plans to boost Twitter's revenue and make it a "free speech" platform. But never mind: the deal's on ice as Elon investigates the # of Twitter bots.
- __Late May:__ Elon says Twitter undercounts bots on its platform, claiming that 20% are "fake/spam accounts." The deal can't move forward till he gets more info.
- __Now:__ Elon’s moving to terminate the deal over the bot thing, but Twitter is "[committed](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/08/elon-musk-notifies-twitter-he-is-terminating-deal.html) to closing the transaction" at the agreed price — and has reportedly [hired](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-10/twitter-assembles-legal-team-to-sue-musk-over-dropped-takeover) lawyers to sue. Yesterday Twitter [called](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/11/twitter-says-musks-request-to-terminate-the-deal-is-invalid.html) Elon’s attempt to terminate the deal “invalid.”

__Twitter-finger jitters...__ This situation is a big #facepalm, especially for Twitter shareholders. Twitter stock soared in April after Elon agreed to buy it at a premium of $54.20/share — which would make Twitter worth $44B. The stock’s dropped 16% since Thursday, giving Twitter a $25B market cap.

__Expectations breed disappointment…__ Nothing’s really changed about Twitter: it’s still the same biz, where revenue and user growth are slowing. But *expectations* of a pricey Elon-quisition boosted its value. Now all possible results look bad for Twitter: either it forces someone who *doesn’t want* to run Twitter to buy Twitter, or it loses an expected multibillion-dollar payday for investors.

__Bad spotlight…__ The biggest crypto exchange on the block could be in for some US regulatory scrutiny. Reuters [reported](https://www.reuters.com/technology/exclusive-binance-served-crypto-traders-iran-years-despite-us-sanctions-clients-2022-07-11/) that __[Binance](https://robinhood.com/crypto/BUSD/)__ allowed Iranians to trade on its platform, despite 2018 US sanctions and an internal company ban. The sanctions were designed to curb money movement for Iran’s nuclear program and financial support for its proxy states in the region. Human-rights activists said they hurt ordinary Iranians. 

- __In 2019 and 2020:__ Binance employees reportedly internally celebrated their Iranian user base. Iranians said they liked the exchange because until mid-2021 all you needed to trade was an email address.
- __Last year:__ The blockchain behemoth, which claims [120M](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2022-06-23/binance-bnb-ceo-moves-to-dubai-as-us-regulators-target-the-crypto-exchange) users, tightened its anti-money laundering — booting Iranian customers in the process.
- __Now:__ It's unclear what consequences Binance might face (if any) since its main exchange is not a US company. 

__Bad timing…__ Being accused of letting customers evade sanctions is never a great look, and it follows increased global calls for crypto regulation. The European Central Bank is pushing for stablecoin regs, and last week the US Treasury said governments need to come together to make it harder to launder with crypto.

__Crypto’s big value prop is double-sided…__ It's supposed to be permissionless: traders don't need a third party (like a bank) to approve transactions. But not everyone's a fan: regulators highlight this feature as a global financial risk that can empower criminals and sanctioned countries. When industry titans like Binance make headlines for not playing by the rules, tougher regulations likely aren’t far behind.

__At least AriZona cans still cost 99 cents...__ While the iced tea has been [sold](https://www.cnn.com/videos/business/2022/06/09/arizona-iced-tea-beverages-price-inflation-economy-qmb-vpx.cnnbusiness) for $0.99 for [three decades](https://www.cnn.com/videos/business/2022/06/09/arizona-iced-tea-beverages-price-inflation-economy-qmb-vpx.cnnbusiness), the global economy has been steeped in #flation. We'll see the latest when June's US consumer price data comes out Wednesday. May’s wasn’t pretty: prices were up 8.6% from last year. For context, annual US inflation [averaged](https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/hr-topics/compensation/pages/annual-inflation-hit-40-year-high-in-may.aspx) less than 2% from 2010 to 2019.

- __’Flation = a global fixation.__ In May, South Korea's inflation [hit](https://asia.nikkei.com/Economy/Inflation/South-Korea-inflation-hit-nearly-24-year-high-in-June#:~:text=Statistics%20Korea%20said%20the%20consumer,%25%20and%20restaurants%20climbing%208%25.) a 24-year high, the UK's [surged](https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/uk-inflation-hits-91-may-2022-06-22/) to a 40-year high, and Turkey had [73%](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/03/turkeys-inflation-soars-to-73percent-as-food-and-energy-costs-skyrocket.html) inflation (not a typo).

__The balloon might be shrinking...__ Central banks have been raising interest rates to depress prices. Last week, the Fed indicated it’ll need to speed up rate hikes if the inflation outlook worsens. But as recession fears grow, we're seeing signs prices could cool:

- __Oil's dropping:__ This is a biggie, since oil powers everything from your deliveries to your grocery store's fridge bill. Oil had its steepest one-day drop since March last week, and US gas prices dropped 21 days in a row — the longest down-streak in over two years.
- __Ditto raw materials:__ Prices of commodities like cotton, lumber, and copper — used in everything from motors to homes and jewelry — have plunged since May.
- __Inventory's growing:__ From __[Walmart](https://robinhood.com/stocks/WMT)__ to __[Target](https://robinhood.com/stocks/TGT)__, large retailers are drowning in inventory — and trying to sell it at a discount. Price-slashing could ease ’flation.
- __Tariffs could be cut:__ The US imports a lot from China (think: gadgets, clothes, metals). Now President Biden may ease some of the tariffs boosting costs on $300B worth of Chinese goods.

__Anti-’flation may be more of a whimper…__ than a *whoosh*. We’re starting to see pinholes in the inflation balloon. One example: consumer spending [fell](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/15/retail-sales-may-2022-unexpected-0point3percent-decline-hammered-by-inflation.html) in May as higher rates and prices strained savings. But services inflation (like wages and labor) is still rising [sharply](https://www.reuters.com/markets/us/us-service-sector-inflation-threatens-commodity-prices-2022-07-07/). Not great for prices, since services make up 60% of US consumer spending. But now even the labor market is slowly cooling — bad for the economy, but potentially good for prices.

__Blockchange...__ Crypto's revolutionary ambitions are being questioned. Activists started [talking](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/14/style/abortion-crypto-donations.html) about using decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) to financially support people seeking abortions after the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade leaked in May. Two months later, a __CowgirlDAO__ has raised $40K+ and __ChoiceDAO's__ aiming to raise $1M. But some crypto fans say this has been a [missed opportunity](https://www.coindesk.com/business/2022/07/05/crypto-fundraising-after-end-of-roe-tepid-so-far/) to fulfill blockchain tech's anti-[censorship](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/3JA1v5bdIfQh45Djc5Yp0M/) promises. 

__Midsummer splurge…__ Bonus season is making a bonus appearance as some employers dish out extra dollars to retain workers. Last week, __[Peloton](https://robinhood.com/stocks/PTON)__ [doled](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/06/peloton-sweetens-employee-pay-incentives-as-it-fights-to-boost-morale.html) out one-time bonuses. Last month, Exxon's US employees got a bonus payout worth 3% of their salaries. And in May, __[Microsoft](https://robinhood.com/stocks/MSFT)__ announced plans to nearly [double](https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/hr-topics/compensation/pages/microsoft-to-nearly-double-salary-budgets-expand-stock-compensation.aspx#:~:text=Microsoft%20Corp.%20said%20it%20plans,help%20people%20cope%20with%20inflation.) its budget for raises. Since nearly [three-fourths](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/09/more-pay-raises-are-on-the-way-for-many-workers-this-year.html) of workers say their salary won’t keep up with inflation, a bonus may not be enough to retain talent. Delta lost $780M last quarter, but was profitable in March as pricey airfares and packed flights offset fuel costs. Still, Delta and others are struggling to meet hot summer demand (which is back around pre-pandemic levels) as labor shortages persist. We’ll see whether [thousands](https://www.cbs46.com/2022/06/17/delta-among-us-airlines-with-highest-number-weekend-delays-cancellations/) of delays and cancellations hit Delta’s earnings. 

__Watching that credit-card APR rise like...__ that’s a lot of interest. All eyes are on big-bank earnings this week, with __[Citi](https://robinhood.com/stocks/C)__, __[Wells Fargo](https://robinhood.com/stocks/WFC)__, __[BlackRock](https://robinhood.com/stocks/BLK)__, __[Morgan Stanley](https://robinhood.com/stocks/MS)__, and __[JPMorgan](https://robinhood.com/stocksJPM)__ dropping #s. Big-bank profits fell in the first quarter, and a looming econ downturn could add to their troubles. Think: less revenue from deal-making, trading, and loans (mortgage lending has dropped as rates rise). JPMorgan cut [hundreds](https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/22/investing/jpmorgan-layoffs-mortgages/index.html) of employees in June, and more Wall Street layoffs are likely. Analysts expect earnings to come in slightly lower than initially forecast.

__$450K to take off…__ even space-flation is getting high (a ticket to the edge of space cost “only” $250K last year). __[Virgin Galactic](https://robinhood.com/stocks/SPCE)__ shares jumped 12% after it announced it’s teaming up with __[Boeing](https://robinhood.com/stocks/BA)__ subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences to build two space-tourism carrier planes (dubbed: “motherships”). Virgin's mothership flies the spacecraft to its launch point, where the engine separates and launches passengers into space.

- __Frequent flier:__ Virgin's "Delta class" ships will take off weekly once they start flying customers (ETA: 2026), so it’ll need more than the one mothership it has now.
- __Double dip:__ Boeing already has a deal with rival __SpaceX__ to [build](https://www.vox.com/recode/23142055/boeing-spacex-starliner-rocket-crew-dragon) space capsules, but an alliance with Virgin could [generate](https://www.barrons.com/amp/articles/virgin-galactic-boeing-space-motherships-51657196690) billions of additional revenue.

__Dinner rez on the ISS…__ Last year was huge for space tourism, as billionaires like Bezos strapped up in spacesuits (and cowboy [hats](https://www.gq.com/story/bezos-space-hat)) to fly VIPs. Last month, __[Amazon’s](https://robinhood.com/stocks/AMZN)__ Blue Origin launched its fifth space-tourism flight. Meanwhile, SpaceX has launched four crewed flights since last year — but Virgin has just one. 

- __*Long* layover:__ Econ struggles are starting to curb some enthusiasm. In May, Virgin pushed its first commercial space flight to early 2023 — its [second](https://www.forbes.com/sites/kimberleespeakman/2021/10/14/virgin-galactic-delays-commercial-flights-to-end-of-2022-after-spotting-potential-materials-flaw/?sh=1e92c9dcb0eb) delay.

__Taking off is easier in twos…__ Virgin’s deal with Boeing could help it save money on pricey motherships while scaling its biz faster. Getting ahead is key, since the space-tourism market is expected to nearly triple to $3B by 2028. But $$ may still be up and far away for companies like Virgin. The stock’s down 90% from records, and it's TBD when, or if, it’ll become profitable.

Virgin Galactic and Boeing team up on the next gen of “motherships” as space tourism revs up

__Sorry and you’re welcome...__ Hackers stole $9M from DeFi protocol __Crema Finance__ over the weekend. But in a world full of crypto heists, the real surprise is what came next: they [returned](https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2022/07/07/crema-finance-attacker-returns-almost-8m-keeps-17m-bounty/) all but $1.7M of it. It wasn’t sheer generosity: in return for most of the stolen funds, Crema called the $1.7M a "white-hat bounty” (aka: a non-criminal reward for finding a security flaw). A trend is emerging where hackers steal crypto only to return a large portion. We’re calling it “hack to return.” 

__All carrot, no stick...__ Crypto exchanges, platforms, and protocols that find themselves on the receiving end of hacks are trying a new approach to getting their money back: asking nicely. It sounds odd, but hackers are increasingly on board — that’s because making a deal often means being let off as a flaw-finder instead of hunted as a criminal:

- __Optimist:__ Hackers stole $16M worth of tokens from an __[ethereum](https://robinhood.com/crypto/ETH/)__ layer 2 called __Optimism__ in June, but later returned $14M worth, keeping the rest as a bounty. 
- __Altruist?__ A hacker stole $600M from the __Poly Network__ in August, but gave it back in return for a promised $500K bounty (the nickname: "Mr. White Hat").

Webthieve

__It's getting harder to clean dirty crypto...__ Blockchain analytics companies like __Chainalysis__ are getting better at tracking stolen funds, making it difficult for hackers to launder and anonymously cash out. (Just ask "[financial rapper](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/7ycuKKAK4DhlIJ1iFIBRCe/articles/3uR2Sq93Mjj65EyqhxCEXV/)” Razzlekhan, arrested in connection with a $4.5B crypto heist in February.) The hack-to-return trend is an outcome of a $945B industry that's seemingly easy to rob, but whose unofficial cops never lose sight of the getaway car. Sometimes it's easier for hackers to toss most of the cash out the window, and keep what they can move with.

🚀 Virgin’s “mothership” deal

__Joining le chat…__ Big Tech’s power is being reeled in over in Europe. On Tuesday, European Union lawmakers [passed](https://www.reuters.com/technology/eu-lawmakers-pass-landmark-tech-rules-enforcement-worry-2022-07-05/) regulation aiming to stop tech giants from playing favorites with their own products (think: __[Apple](https://robinhood.com/stocks/AAPL)__ apps on the App Store, Basics on __[Amazon](https://robinhood.com/stocks/AMZN)__). The Digital Markets Act (DMA) covers a lot of ground, including banning Amazon from using third-party seller data to inform its own products. Most notably, it could break Apple’s App Store monopoly. 

- __Apple’s core:__ The DMA could [force](https://www.theverge.com/2022/3/25/22996248/apple-sideloading-apps-store-third-party-eu-dma-requirement) Apple to let Euro customers download apps directly from developers, instead of only through the App Store.
- __Profit pit:__ Apple raked in about $86B through its App Store last year, since it takes a 15 to 30% cut of paid downloads, subscriptions, and in-app purchases. 
- __Sliced and diced:__ Companies that violate the DMA could be hit with fines totaling 10% of annual global sales.

__iOStressed…__ The DMA could disrupt more than just app downloads. The regulation says consumers must be allowed to choose their own digital assistant (sorry, Siri) and mandates that messaging platforms like iMessage and __[Meta’s](https://robinhood.com/stocks/META)__ WhatsApp be able to communicate with each other (read: group-chat chaos). European lawmakers aren't playing around.

__Regulation matters, but enforcement is key…__ Huge fines mean tech behemoths will be forced to pay attention. But attention isn't the same as compliance, and regulation is sure to be followed by *litigation*. The EU's task force will have 80 officials, but pro-regulation lawmakers say more heads are needed to fight Big Tech's lawyers — so don't count the App Store’s dominance out just yet.

__Same-day TP delivery…__ with a side of mozz sticks. Amazon’s taking a bigger bite out of the food-delivery biz after announcing a 2% stake in Grubhub yesterday. Refresher: Grubhub was [scooped](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/1Nve3vhlByq10W74UeVgUP/articles/4pdmA56EqHRt47CYsEk4tx/) up by European delivery giant __Just Eat__ in 2020, but Just Eat is trying to [sell](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/36fBoHhcd4FMlxtriYB5p0/articles/4yNtNelQ0okw74M04h5Luf/) the US-based biz as the delivery race heats up. Now:

- __Prime rib:__ Amazon’s 200M+ Prime members can access a free year of Grubhub+ ([valued](https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/travel/is-grubhub-plus-worth-it#:~:text=Grubhub%2B%20is%20a%20%249.99%2Dper,matching%20for%20No%20Kid%20Hungry.) at $10/month), including free delivery and members-only discounts.
- __Zero loyalty:__ Shares of __[DoorDash](https://robinhood.com/stocks/DASH)__ sank 7% and __[Uber](https://robinhood.com/stocks/UBER)__ dropped 5% on fears that Prime members could ditch those food-delivery services for Grubhub.
- __Perk’d up:__ UK delivery staple __Deliveroo__ said memberships [quadrupled](https://www.wsj.com/articles/amazon-could-turn-grubhub-into-a-tastier-meal-11657115118) in February after Amazon rolled out a similar Prime perk [last](https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/15/amazon-and-deliveroo-deepen-ties-with-prime-food-delivery-bundle.html) year.

__Strolling to the bookstore...__ Amazon’s sales have slumped as shoppers cut back on online spending. Last quarter, the Zon [posted](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/28/technology/amazon-earnings.html) its slowest quarterly growth in decades. Grubhub delivery perks could help justify its recent 17% Prime price hike while boosting subs. It’s easier to lean on partnerships than create perks from scratch: in 2019 the Zon ditched its Amazon Restaurants delivery biz as hot competition bit into profits.

__The "subscription-squared" model is here...__ First we had credit-card companies offering __[Lyft](https://robinhood.com/stocks/LYFT)__ Pink and DashPass subs as perks. Now we have paid subscriptions like Prime offering *other* paid subs as perks. Think: Hulu [offering](https://time.com/nextadvisor/credit-cards/hulu-subscriber-uber-eats-access/) subscribers free Uber Eats Passes for six months. These partnerships let consumers enjoy several perks at a lower price — and help subscription partners keep customers loyal longer.

__Model Less...__ Tesla's streak of record quarterly deliveries is over. For the first time in over two years, __[Tesla’s](https://robinhood.com/stocks/TSLA)__ deliveries *fell* from the previous quarter. The big T delivered 254,695 cars during the quarter that ended in June — [fewer](https://www.wsj.com/articles/tesla-vehicle-deliveries-tumble-after-china-factory-shutdown-11656779597) than expected and down by nearly 60K from the previous quarter. A few reasons for the slowdown:

- __China's Covid crackdown:__ The zero-tolerance policy hurt Shanghai output. Tesla had to halt production at its largest factory for weeks because of citywide lockdowns.
- __Global growing pains:__ Tesla’s having trouble ramping up production at its newest factories, in Germany and Texas, which Elon has [called](https://www.wsj.com/articles/elon-musk-calls-teslas-new-car-factories-gigantic-money-furnaces-11655934078?mod=article_inline) “gigantic money furnaces.” 

__NEV-er say never...__ Tesla's still the leader in battery-only EVs, but its stock has fallen 42% this year as rivals edge closer to the Technoking's lead. On the one hand, Tesla’s dealing with mounting electric competition from auto OGs like __[Volkswagen](https://robinhood.com/stocks/VWAGY)__, __[GM](https://robinhood.com/stocks/GM)__, and __[Ford](https://robinhood.com/stocks/F)__. On the other, it's dealing with rising EV and “new energy vehicle” (NEV) companies, especially in the key market of China.

- __"New energy":__ The term China uses to denote plug-in vehicles eligible for gov’t subsidies. That includes battery-only vehicles (like Tesla) and hybrid plug-ins and fuel-cell cars.

__New energy could be Tesla’s new enemy…__ While Tesla’s famous for its battery-only whips, plug-in hybrids have a battery *plus* a regular engine for longer journeys — but are still considered “zero emission” under China’s sales rules. That means they get the benefit of less #RangeAnxiety but just as much subsidy support. That flexible NEV status helped BYD quadruple deliveries to 641K cars in the first half of the year, compared to Tesla’s 565K.

__Tapas & track pants…__ __[Lululemon’s](https://robinhood.com/stocks/LULU)__ taking its athleisure biz to Spain — its first new European market since 2019. Shares of the legging legend [jumped](https://robinhood.com/stocks/LULU) 8% yesterday after it announced plans to open two brick-and-mortar stores in Barcelona and Madrid this fall. Lulu is also set to debut a Spanish e-comm site this month as it expands its global footprint. 

- __Poised passport:__ Lulu has 40 stores in 8 European countries, including France and Germany, but earns [most](https://www.fool.com/investing/2022/07/04/nike-lululemon-which-stock-buy-right-now/) of its sales from North America.
- __Tourist hotspots:__ As recreational travel rebounds, Lulu’s eyeing Europe’s top destinations (think: Paris’ Champs-Élysées and Italy) as expansion targets.

__Layover leggings…__ in every color. Lots of pandemic thrivers have seen slowing growth as “normal” life returns, but Lulu fans are *still* splurging on $80 sports bras and biker shorts. Last year Lulu’s sales popped to a record $6B (beating rival __[Under Armour](https://robinhood.com/stocks/UA)__). And Lulu boosted *this year’s* sales outlook to $7B+ after sales grew 32% last quarter.

- __By adding Spain__ to its portfolio, Lulu’s building on a key pillar in its long-term growth plan (dubbed: “Power of Three x2”) to double [revenue](https://corporate.lululemon.com/media/press-releases/2022/04-20-2022-113017957) by 2026.
- __Lulu’s “PoT” strategy__ includes quadrupling international revenue and doubling sales for its e-comm and emerging men’s biz.
- __So far so good:__ Lulu’s brand appeal has helped it [gain](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/04/20/lululemon-lulu-announces-new-5-year-targets-at-analyst-day-2022.html) more global market share than any other active apparel brand since 2019.

__To find your base, you may have to leave home…__ Lulu’s already crushing it at your outdoor mall — now it’s going for splurge-happy tourists. It’s not forsaking its core North American customer base, just finding them where they’re most likely to spend. Lulu could attract wealthy regulars on long layovers, but also new foreign customers who’ve seen it hyped on Insta.
