- __Booze giant [Constellation Brands](https://robinhood.com/stocks/STZ)__ thinks it's the perfect time to invest in bcommerce. Constellation owns alcohol classics like Robert Mondavi wine, Svedka vodka, and Ballast Point beer. Now it wants some direct-to-consumer action...
- __Empathy Wines:__ The D2C wine company  Constellation just acquired. The 1-year-old startup was launched by Gary Vaynerchuk, who founded __Resy__ (later sold to Amex). Its 2K subscribers have bought 15K cases of "vineyard-to-table" CA wine. Sounds empathetic.

__Constellation isn't just buying a startup...__ It's buying the whole bcommerce biz model. 

- __Over [90%](https://www.forbes.com/sites/chrisfurnari/2020/07/01/constellation-brands-buys-gary-vaynerchuks-direct-to-consumer-empathy-wines-brand/#6df9934e4cea)__ of Constellation's wine sales happen through wholesalers and bars/restaurants (not pandemic-friendly). 
- __Yet 46 states__ allow alcohol to be delivered right to your door, which could cut out the restaurant and liquor store middle men for Constellation. 
- __Empathy does exactly this.__ And tricks Constellation learns through Empathy could be applied to its other alcohol brands.

__In a fragmented industry, brand matters *extra*...__ Many young drinkers can’t name/pronounce a wine label besides whatever sits next to Two-Buck Chuck at Trader Joe's. Constellation is hoping Empathy Wines' brand can bring some of that personal touch to its liquor portfolio.

__Beyond borders...__ __[Alibaba](https://robinhood.com/stocks/BABA)__ is "the Amazon of China," with one key difference: Alibaba.com is a marketplace that connects over 1B buyers and sellers — it doesn't actually *own* any of the merch (no "Baba Basics"). While Alibaba trails __[Amazon](https://robinhood.com/stocks/amzn)__ in many respects, it has it beat on grocery stores. Before we get into the meat of that, let's talk  alt-meat:

- __[Beyond Meat](https://robinhood.com/stocks/BYND)__ will start selling its meatless patties in Alibaba's Freshippo grocery stores.
- __Back to Freshippo.__ Think of them as those human-free, cashier-less Amazon Go stores, but kicked up a dozen notches.


__More like "the Amazon of the Future"...__ Alibaba launched Freshippo in 2016 to pioneer the "New Retail" concept. Think: mobile-order products, unmanned checkouts, and hot food lockers. Now it has over 200 Freshippos, all aimed at creating a world where: "the boundary between online and offline disappears" (would watch that movie). 

- __Freshippo locations__ serve as both store and warehouse — 30-minute delivery is available for online orders (if you're within a 2 mile radius). Conveyor belts on the ceiling carry your bagged goods out for delivery. 
- __Online orders make up over [60%](https://www.alizila.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Hema-Factsheet_2019-011219-FINAL-ONLINE.pdf)__ of Freshippo's total sales — you can order a sandwich from your phone in a subway car, and pick it up in a hot locker at the next stop.
- __The offline experience is wild too:__ Robots deliver food in some of Freshippo's restaurant spots. Customers can pick live lobster out of fish tanks. There's also the option to pay with your face (maybe stick with the app).

__It's all about the daily touch points...__ The more touch points you have with a company's products each day, the more intimate that customer-company relationship is. Companies like __Apple__ and __Amazon__ have high daily touch points. But operations like Freshippo bring that daily interaction to another level. That intense interconnectedness is what Amazon is trying to achieve with its Go stores (and everything else it does), but Alibaba is far ahead.

Now, Uber may be learning to love again with much-smaller food delivery rival Postmates...

- __Rebound acquisition:__ Uber has made an offer to buy __Postmates__ for $2.6B, according to #PFWTM (people familiar with the matter).
- __Intimate wedding:__ In the mafia-style territory split of the food delivery world, Postmates controls just 8% of the US market. 
- __Limited options:__ There are only 4 big players in the US food delivery market. Don __DoorDash__ leads (and just hit a $16B valuation), while Uber Eats is #3 with 22%.

__Better than going solo...__ Uber wants consolidation because it needs to reduce the aggressive price competition it faces every day. But Uber is not the only suitor courting Postmates' hand...

- __For $39/month__ (which you have to pay, if not it's literally just a mirror) you get access to live classes with trainers and on-demand workouts. Also: one-on-one live personal training via camera (you pay per class). 
- __During lockdowns,__ home fitness soared. Peloton sales jumped 66% last quarter, and its stock more than doubled in the past 3 months. Lulu wants in on the hype because...

__Retail isn't dead...__ bad retail is. - __93 companies have joined__ the boycott so far, including blue-chip big shots like __[Verizon](https://robinhood.com/stocks/VZ)__ and __[Colgate-Palmolive](https://robinhood.com/stocks/CL)__.  __[Unilever](https://robinhood.com/stocks/UL)__ is boycotting both FB *and* __[Twitter](https://robinhood.com/stocks/TWTR)__ for the year. __[Starbucks](https://robinhood.com/stocks/SBUX)__ and __[Coke](https://robinhood.com/stocks/KO)__ are pausing social media ads as a whole.


__Heating up...__  While boycotters like __Patagonia__ have a history of activism, investors were concerned to see less outspoken (and bigger) corporations involved. Case in point: FB stock plunged 8% after Unilever joined the chat. That's when FB said it'll start [labeling](https://www.wsj.com/articles/unilever-to-halt-u-s-ads-on-facebook-and-twitter-for-rest-of-2020-11593187230) political speech that violates its rules and banning hate speech on ads. That's a shift from the [laissez faire](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/2gsJLXsNrmdB5gooWaPQZU/articles/7EZIKIcF4qWvz5vhOUUPFB/) approach it took on controversial Trump posts. Boycotters say it's not enough.

__Facebook might be too big to cancel...__ thanks to its 3B users across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. FB platforms are so deeply ingrained in the world's social psyche that the 2018 #deleteFacebook movement barely made a blip on numbers. Since the world's population isn't dropping FB, most companies probably can't either:

- __It's a prime marketplace__ thanks to its hyper-targeted ads — FB has so much info on its users that it can guarantee a steakhouse ad won't be wasted on a vegan. Also...
- __The world's top 100 brands__ only account for [6%](https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/26/tech/facebook-boycott/) of FB's ad sales — for millions of smaller businesses, FB is the only effective way to reach new customers. 



Facebook ad boycott gains corporate strength — but is it Too Big To Cancel?

__The old college try...__ Four years after signing the biggest apparel deal in the history of college sports, __[Under Armour](https://robinhood.com/stocks/UAA)__ wants out. The $280M, 15-year deal gave UA the exclusive right to design all uniforms for UCLA's Varsity teams. But UA isn't feeling the team spirit anymore:

- __UA says it's allowed to back out__ of the contract because: “We have been paying for marketing benefits that we have not received for an extended time period." 
- __UCLA doesn't buy it__ and says it'll do everything it can to fight UA's decision (we spy a lawsuit). 

__Protect this Balance Sheet...__ This move is more about cost-slashing than UCLA marketing. In May, UA said it was planning to cut $325M in costs for 2020. UA got hit hard in the corona-conomy:

- __Sales fell 23%__ and it posted a $590M loss thanks to corona-closed stores.
- __UA expects__ sales could fall 50%-60% this quarter — now it's trying to build an emergency fund to weather the storm.

__Under Armour is too much ‘ath’, not enough ‘leisure’...__ Consumer preference is shifting toward versatility — especially in the corona-conomy, where 1 pant can triple as a workout, Netflix, and grocery shopping outfit. UA has been highly focused on technical performance, not as much on leisure. That's why UA's stock is down 55% this year, while leisure-friendly __[Nike](https://robinhood.com/stocks/NKE)__ is down only 6% and leisure-obsessed __[Lululemon](https://robinhood.com/stocks/LULU)__ is *up* 25%.

__Like getting the car on Friday night...__ Party at the branch. Bank stocks like __[JP Morgan](https://robinhood.com/stocks/JPM)__ and __[Citi](https://robinhood.com/stocks/C)__ rose Thursday on some loosened parental guidance from the FDIC (that's the government agency responsible for making you feel safe about depositing your cash). If your bank goes rupt, the FDIC's got you covered up to $250K per insured bank. With great deposit insurance, comes great responsibility...

- __The FDIC supervises banks__ to make sure they're not being irresponsible with your $$$. Banks make money off your idle checking account dollars by investing them, often as interest-generating loans (that's kind of their MO). 
- __Loans are critical to the economy.__ All that cash isn't *really* just sitting in checking/savings accounts. It's fueling economic growth through loans.  
- __The FDIC just gave banks a big break__: it'll [allow](https://www.wsj.com/articles/fdic-to-lift-postcrisis-curb-on-banks-11593095709) them to invest inactive customer cash into venture capital — think an investment in a pre-IPO company like Airbnb. The FDIC *also* reduced the amount of cash that banks need to set aside as reserves for potential loan losses.

__One step back, one step forward...__ This FDIC announcement rolls back the Volcker Rule, which was imposed after the '08 financial crisis. The goal was to ban the types of risky investments that led to big bank failures. Weakening the Volcker Rules gives banks a bit more freedom, *but separately they also just got grounded*:

- __Hand over the Switch:__ The same day as the FDIC's allowance-boosting moves, The Fed [ordered](https://apnews.com/5f7b81280fd44191e41272719f6a7020) banks to stop stock buybacks until September. It's also banning banks from increasing dividend payouts to shareholders.
- __Canceling Disneyland:__ The Fed determined the US' largest banks could lose *$700B* in a worst-case recession scenario. So it wants them to save that buyback and dividend money to ensure they could weather a bad economic storm (The Fed's not keen to bail out banks again). 

_When big daddy FDIC raises your allowance_

__For investors, it's kind of a wash...__ Shareholders value stocks based on expectations of future profits. Loosening of the Volcker Rule could boost bank profits, which could justify higher stock prices. Buuut... the Fed is limiting dividends and stock buybacks, which are drivers of returns for shareholders. The events canceled out: bank stocks jumped on the FDIC news then fell on Fed news.

Big banks get a big deregulation break, then get grounded by the Fed

__Insert Elon side-eye...__ __[Virgin Galactic](https://robinhood.com/stocks/SPCE)__ stock soared on news of a sweet NASA partnership. Virgin will try to hotel-ify the International Space Station to help NASA commercialize the galaxy. It's [working](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/1r9xFjfsAFNRg58wQ4L06m/articles/6nxi97j9OUO3HLvof2LvA1) on becoming a space travel agency, coordinating resources and travel plans for ISS-bound customers. Virgin stock got a second bump after [completing](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/25/virgin-galactic-spce-completes-second-glide-test-rocket-powered-flights-next.html) a successful glide test flight — It says full rocket-powered flights are next. All this excitement despite Virgin only sending 5 paying customers into sub-orbital space so far.

__Renegade, renegade...__ The discount retail giant behind TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Homegoods wants *nothing* to do with online shopping. __[TJX](https://robinhood.com/stocks/TJX)__ took an $887M loss on closed stores last quarter, but didn't bow to the e-pressure. On the contrary: it *shut down* its ecommerce site since online activity makes up just 2% of the chain's total sales. Now that most TJX stores have reopened, sales are actually [*higher*](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/2iRXx4Lo0sb4Xj39ZUGriE/articles/5k1guEZaA7mTcZAjnmvyLE) than a year ago — That's thanks to treasure-hunting shoppers hitting up physical stores for some "revenge spending" after being stuck inside so long.

__Zuck gets ad-Zucked...__ __[Facebook](https://robinhood.com/stocks/FB)__ stock dropped 11% for the week on a boycott of Facebook's ad platform (including Instagram) to protest FB's policies on misinformation and hate speech. What started with just early boycott birds __Ben & Jerry's__ and __Patagonia__ snowballed to the mainstream — __[Verizon](https://robinhood.com/stocks/VZ)__, __[Coca-Cola](https://robinhood.com/stocks/KO),__, __[Unilever](https://robinhood.com/stocks/UL)__, and __[Honda](https://robinhood.com/stocks/HMC)__ gave Zuck their corporate [thumbs down](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/26/business/media/Facebook-advertising-boycott.html). On Friday CEO Mark Zuckerberg responded to the criticism with a [pledge](https://www.facebook.com/zuck/posts/10112048980882521) to flag speech from politicians that broke its policies, even if those posts are "newsworthy".


__When you order pizza for 100...__ and everyone goes to *the other* party. __[Ford](https://robinhood.com/stocks/F)__ just announced a redesign of its prize profit puppy, the F-150, the first new F-Series in six years. Ford unveiled the shiny pickup and flexed the hands-free driving mode. But __Lordstown Motors__ threw its own pickup-unveiling party on the same day, and got America's VP to attend. The EV startup got more buzz than the Detroit icon — and Ford stock [dropped](https://www.barrons.com/articles/ford-launched-a-new-f-150-but-lordstowns-ev-pickup-got-the-love-heres-why-51593189805) after its outshined unveiling. 

🏦 Big banks' big break

__Short end of the breadstick...__ Olive Garden parent __[Darden Restaurants](https://robinhood.com/stocks/DRI)__ got it on earnings. In addition to the unlimited breadstick icon, Darden parents eight other restaurant chains, including Capital Grille and LongHorn Steakhouse. All its kids disappointed this quarter. 

- __Sales plunged 43%__, and Darden posted an Eggplant Parm-sized $480M loss (compared to a $209M *profit* last year). All of its 1.5K dining rooms were closed at some point in the March-May quarter.

__Blame the booze...__ During lockdowns, [99%](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/07/darden-stock-jumps-as-olive-garden-parent-cuts-executive-pay-to-go-sales-skyrocket.html) of Olive Gardens were open for curbside pickup. Takeout sales [soared](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/6jMYrs8xXmNhuDOMY3gXEt/articles/6apqgjOYNC1qcTq8YG3EL6) 142%, and 3X'd at LongHorn (Darden doesn't deliver). But that wasn't enough to make up for all the lost booze bucks.

- __Alcohol makes up around [30%](https://smallbusiness.chron.com/revenue-comes-selling-alcohol-34021.html)__ of restaurants' sales. And that $40 bottle of Merlot you see on the menu probably cost the OG just $15. 
- __Boozy beverages have around a 70% profit margin__, so a restaurant makes 70 cents profit on each buck of price. Your $10 mojito cost $3 to whip up — the restaurant pockets a $7 profit.  
- __During closures,__ restaurants lost their biggest profit puppy: alcohol. Lockdowns mean takeout, and takeout means BYO(cheaper)B.

__Big chains can survive and come back stronger...__ Darden stock jumped because it survived — 91% of its dining rooms are now open and it expects earnings will be positive again by 1st quarter 2021. Plus, it still has $750M in cash to weather slowdowns. Smaller biz isn't so lucky: [53%](https://www.wsj.com/articles/140-000-businesses-listed-on-yelp-are-still-closed-because-of-covid-19-pandemic-11593057601) of restaurants that closed during the pandemic said they *won't* reopen. That wipes out a lot of Darden's competition. 

Olive Garden's sales plunge on closed stores and limited alcohol: the BYOB problem

__Gmail's worst nightmare...__ Almost exactly a year ago, __[Slack](https://robinhood.com/stocks/WORK)__ went public with the [goal](https://www.ccn.com/slack-ceo-vows-to-kill-company-email-by-2026-ahead-of-16-billion-float/) of killing company email forever. It hasn't been able to do that completely because of one big roadblock: you're still emailing people *outside* your company. Slack is almost exclusively an internal messaging tool. But with its [latest](https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/24/21302050/slack-connect-work-emails-shared-channels-future) development, Slack might be able to drive the nail into *all of* work email's coffin:

- __Slack Connect:__ Tired of that 40-page long email thread with your marketing partners/clients? Slack Connect allows up to 20 orgs to collab over Slack. 
- __Shared channels:__ It's a magnification of Slack's "shared channels" idea, first tested in 2017 to allow multiple companies to work in a (you guessed it) shared channel. It is inter-office communication — but 100X more ping'able. 

__Nothing like a Nando's name drop...__ to seal the value statement. Slack believes Connect is for more than just project-based communication. Over 1M users have already tested it. 

- __Mention:__ UK chicken icon __Nando's__ has been using it to communicate with its food delivery partner. Others are using it for customer support, and some doctors are even using it to share COVID-19 experiences. 
- __*Flex* Mention:__ Slack humble bragged that it used Connect to coordinate its (super low-interest) $800M convertible bond offering. The law firm, the consulting firm, and the i-bankers... all in one channel.

__Consumer messaging could be Slack's next frontier...__ Slack is 100% focused on business communications. Now, it's expanding its focus from pure intra-company to cross-company. __[Microsoft](https://robinhood.com/stocks/MSFT)__ just [launched](https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/22/21298766/microsoft-teams-personal-launch-preview-accounts) a *personal* version of its Slack rival, which is called Teams, to communicate with friends/family. With the "Connect" platform already built out, Slack might not be far behind. 

Slack gets closer to killing work email forever with cross-company messaging

__Well, that's a change...__ __[Google](https://robinhood.com/stocks/GOOGL)__ will pay some news publishers to license their content for a new service it's launching this year. News outlets have been wanting this for years. But why is Google finally doing it now?

- __Adpocalypse:__ Even before 2020, news outlets have been losing ad sales to Big Tech. In 2019, [52%](https://www.forbes.com/sites/petersuciu/2019/10/11/more-americans-are-getting-their-news-from-social-media/#b214d323e179) of American adults got news from __[Facebook](https://robinhood.com/stocks/FB)__. You scroll your feed to scan the headlines, Facebook gets the ad bucks.
- __Under Pressure:__ Google's been getting heat from  antitrust regulators in France and Australia. They want it and Facebook to share revenue with news publishers, who drive eyes to Google pages (but don't get Google ad money). 

__This is a step in that direction...__ Google's future news service will include content from local and national news publications — and the news agencies will get a piece of the ad money Google brings in when you scroll. It has a few on board already, and is looking to expand. It's not the first to dabble in paying publishers:

- __Facebook__ began [paying](https://www.vox.com/recode/2019/10/24/20929919/facebook-zuckerberg-murdoch-news-publishers-pay-content) some publishers in its news section back in October. 
- __[Apple](https://robinhood.com/stocks/AAPL)__ compensates news publishers for their content on its Apple News+ subscription service. 



"_What is that thing?_"

__This aims to solve two existential problems...__ for news publishers: 

- __#1:__ Most people have been trained *not* to pay for news, thanks to years of free news available on tech and social platforms. 
- __#2:__ Big Tech does ads better than news publishers because it connects ads with the right viewers thanks to better targeting. 
- __Solution:__ Google's news service will likely be free for consumers. And publishers will get a cut of the ad revenue that Google generates adjacent to their articles.

🥖 Olive Garden's short breadstick 

__What a plant-based player...__ When it comes to alt-meat, __[Starbucks](https://robinhood.com/stocks/SBUX)__ is not monogamous. After linking up with __[Beyond Meat](https://robinhood.com/stocks/BYND)__ in Canada and China, Starbucks has moved on to __Impossible Foods__ sausage in the US. The Impossible Breakfast Sandwich will be available at 15K Starbucks stores - and it's all about the mass exposure:

- __Impossible's biggest partnership:__ By hooking up with Starbs, Impossible just 3X'd the number of eateries that carry its new breakfast sausage. 
- __Bigger than BK:__ Last week, __[Burger King](https://robinhood.com/stocks/QSR)__ rolled out the Impossible Croissan'wich at 7.5K US stores (BK also carries  Impossible Whopper). This Starbucks partnership is 2X bigger. 
- __But it's not exclusive:__ Starbucks sells rival Beyond's products in Canada and China. Beyond stock dipped on the Impossible two-timing yesterday. 

__Impossible wants to be "basic"...__ It doesn't want to be viewed as a niche alternative. But it's running into the (vegan) chicken and egg problem: to get more meat eaters, Impossible has to lower prices to compete with cheaper regular meat — but to lower prices, it needs a large mass of regular meat eaters. So big new partnerships are key. 

- __90%__ of Impossible buyers are traditional meat eaters who dabbled in alt meat for reasons like the pandemic meat shortage, [according](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/23/impossible-foods-business-booms-as-demand-for-plant-based-meat-grows.html) to Impossible's CFO. 
- “We don’t think of it as an alternative (meat) industry. We think we’re making better meat consumed by the meat eater." 
- __18X:__ How much Impossible grew its grocery presence since March. It also launched direct-to-consumer online sales.




_"I thought we had something special" - Beyond Meat to Starbucks Canada_

__The road to mass appeal could be rocky...__ First, Impossible has a bigger rival: Beyond Meat has a publicly traded $9.4B [market value](https://learn.robinhood.com/articles/GByCbiOluG2kcWs1AF6m5/what-is-market-capitalization/), compared to Impossible's ~$2B private [valuation](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/16/impossible-foods-disruptor-50.html). Second, big consumer brands like __[Kellogg](https://robinhood.com/stocks/K)__, __[Kraft](https://robinhood.com/stocks/KHC)__, and __[Nestle](https://robinhood.com/stocks/NSRGY)__ have money to churn out cheaper alt-meat competitors (which they're already doing). Impossible thinks its quality is way better, but it needs growth ASAP to compete. It's already a viable acquisition target for these bigger brands, and may even be [open](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/23/impossible-foods-business-booms-as-demand-for-plant-based-meat-grows.html) to it. 

Impossible Foods wins Starbucks' US love as it chases mainstream goals

__COVID-19 data is the new econ data...__ In mid-March, markets plunged 30% on the alarming surge in coronavirus cases. Months of economic lockdown followed, and US COVID-19 cases slowed thanks to distancing measures. Investors took heart: markets swiftly rose in April and May, approaching record highs. This continued through June, as economies began to reopen. Yesterday, stocks took a health data plunge.

- __"Disturbing surge":__ What Dr. Anthony Fauci [said](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/23/fauci-says-parts-of-us-are-seeing-a-distrubing-surge-of-coronavirus.html) some parts of the US are seeing. Wednesday was the worst day for COVID infections yet, with over [38K new cases](https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/24/21302080/coronavirus-daily-record-cases-covid-19-us-arizona-texas-trump).
- __The hotspots:__ Florida confirmed a record 5.5K new cases on Tuesday, and California added a record 7K. Texas added over 5K, and Houston ICUs were at [97%](https://www.newsweek.com/houston-icus-90-percent-capacity-texas-coronavirus-cases-break-records-1513077) capacity on Wednesday.
- __The quarantines:__ New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut ordered visitors from 8 states including Florida, Texas, and North Carolina to self-quarantine for two weeks. 

__Not entirely surprising...__ It's not shocking that cases are rising as restaurants, bars, and gyms reopen across the US. However, cases in  European countries appear to have [fallen](https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/cases-2019-ncov-eueea) and are not surging again as countries reopen. "Public health guidance" in Europe can be perceived as "infringement of freedom" in America. Now the EU might even [block](https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/06/24/882801218/eu-could-bar-u-s-travelers-due-to-ongoing-rise-in-covid-19-cases) US travelers from entering. 

Surge

__The longer the pandemic lasts, the longer tech stocks are likely to rally...__ The tech-heavy [Nasdaq](https://learn.robinhood.com/articles/1GXPrecRfkSNp0aBblBSsL/what-is-the-nasdaq/)’s gain over the other major indexes is the [biggest](https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-big-u-s-stock-indexes-are-telling-different-stories-11592904600) since 1983. This outperformance shows how fortunes have shifted dramatically in tech's favor during the corona-conomy. 

- __Even after yesterday's drop,__ the techy index is up 9% for the year. Meanwhile, the broader [S&P 500](https://learn.robinhood.com/articles/7kFFEUv46vmMCmMfLuNiRX/what-is-the-s-and-p-500/) is *down* over 6%, while [the Dow](https://learn.robinhood.com/articles/4hnTrXsi908wN9QcqXxbnG/what-is-the-dow-jones-industrial-average-djia/) is down 12%. 
- __Why?__ Big tech companies like __[Amazon](https://robinhood.com/stocks/AMZN)__, __[Facebook](https://robinhood.com/stocks/FB)__, and __[Alphabet](https://robinhood.com/stocks/GOOGL)__ account for 40% of the Nasdaq's value, compared to 20% of the S&P 500's (and even less of the Dow's). And tech is winning more business as you spend more time/money on computers/phones.

__Biggest fashion rebel of 2020...__ TJ Maxx. Discount retail giant __[TJX](https://robinhood.com/stocks/TJX)__ is the company behind the "[affordable splurge](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/1FKKdbQjIpHVV86ywmUIjB/articles/6YscPrg1Mp9jGaNkCngApy)" trifecta:  TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Homegoods. Now, it's also the unexpected rebel of the corona-conomy: 

- __"Nothing will change:"__ Not a phrase you hear in an economy-pummeling pandemic. TJX's CEO [said](https://www.wsj.com/articles/coronavirus-changed-everything-except-t-j-maxx-11592818200?mod=business_lead_pos3) it *won't* leverage ecommerce to boost sales. It'll continue to do absolutely nothing to ramp up its tiny online shopping operation that's currently only 2% of sales.  
- __But TJX takes it to another extreme:__ It fully *shut down* its websites during lockdowns, making online ordering impossible. Now it's actively limiting the items available on its site. 
- __TLDR:__ TJX laughs in the face of online shopping, and wipes ecommerce tears away with a $6 Free People shirt. 

__The magnetic pull of the "treasure hunt"...__ TJX is confident in the joy its customers derive from the "treasure hunting" experience. Finding a $27 Michael Kors bag under a shoe rack is not only fun, but also something to [brag](https://www.investors.com/research/ibd-stock-of-the-day/tjx-earnings-q4-2019-tjx-stock/) about. TJX knows this can only be achieved at its physical stores. 

- __TJX's only focus:__ Drawing shoppers back to its 4.5K brick-and-mortar stores. Since 98% of its sales are in-store (and those stores were closed), TJX took an $887M loss last quarter — But now a majority of its stores have reopened.   
- __*It's working*:__ Sales at reopened stores are actually *higher* than they were a year ago, as deal-starved shoppers flood back into TJX. [Call it](https://www.wsj.com/articles/coronavirus-changed-everything-except-t-j-maxx-11592818200?mod=business_lead_pos3) it "revenge spending" — when you've been cooped up so long that you need to make up for all the shopping you *didn't* do.

__Ecommerce isn't always the solution...__ Online shopping operations can be expensive to implement and maintain. Shipping and returns make it hard to turn a profit on heavily discounted goods. And brands like Ralph Lauren don't want you to see their items selling for $12 online. Plus, ecommerce reduces the number of shoppers at stores. Since TJX thrives on the in-person shopping experience, it's one of the rare companies that can sidestep ecommerce.

But there's only one way to hold a massive event during a pandemic: online.

Apple had to pay a $500M fine over a lawsuit that [alleged](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple-iphones-settlement/apple-to-pay-up-to-500-million-to-settle-u-s-lawsuit-over-slow-iphones-idUSKBN20P2E7) it was purposely slowing down older iPhones to make you buy a new one. But these annual shows are a positive way for Apple to stoke enthusiasm over its latest products. The novelty factor is key. TBD if Apple can come up with cool new features indefinitely.

__When the FIFA match goes better than expected...__ __[Electronic Arts](https://robinhood.com/stocks/EA)__ is the video game company behind *FIFA*, *Madden*, *NBA Live*, and 2000s legend *The Sims* (unforgettable). 

- __Back in May,__ EA said sales for its corona-conomy quarter (April-June) would only rise 1%. 
- __Yesterday,__ at a cozy "fireside chat for the investor community," EA revealed that it was way off. First quarter results are likely to be much better than expected.  

__The stock also rises...__ EA stock ticked [up](https://www.barrons.com/articles/ea-stock-is-rising-as-videogame-sales-boom-amid-the-coronavirus-pandemic-51592927728?mod=hp_minor_pos16) after it leveled up its forecast. Some game publishers were expecting 2020 to be a down year, since upcoming new gaming consoles haven't been released yet.  

- __Turns out,__ 2020 was a big one for video game creators. Gaming companies like EA, __[Activision Blizzard](https://robinhood.com/stocks/ATVI)__, and __[Nintendo](https://robinhood.com/stocks/NTDOY)__ have rallied to multiyear highs on lockdown boredom. With live sports canceled, you've turned to EA Sports' games for entertainment.

__Content is king...__ in media. That goes extra for video games right now. We've seen media snatch up content/IP:  __Netflix__ is on a media buying spree (including signing GoT's writers) and __Spotify__ [struck](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/5A4ZEajsQw0bmhsFuBK1AS/articles/69vDqt7GRc2nQ9TTXjmWSH/) deals with Joe Rogan, Kim Kardashian, and Batman. EA bought the rights to make games featuring major sports teams like the NFL, NHL, and  NBA. Its pipeline of new content for games will be key to continued growth.

__When the re-scheduled cruise gets canceled again...__ Better luck just leaving earth. __[Virgin Galactic](https://robinhood.com/stocks/SPCE)__ stock popped 16% on a fun [headline](https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/22/21298347/virgin-galactic-nasa-private-human-orbital-spaceflight-international-space-station): the Richard Branson-owned space tourism startup wants to hotel-ify the International Space Station (in partnership with NASA, of course). 


- __The Mission:__ NASA wants Virgin to coordinate private trips to the ISS. That includes building out an "orbital astronaut readiness program” for companies/orgs that want to send their people to space (for whatever reason). 
- __The Logistics:__ Virgin would basically act as a space travel agency, coordinating resources, logistics, and travel plans for customers.
- __The Hospitality:__ Virgin [wants](https://www.virgingalactic.com/articles/virgin-galactic-signs-space-act-agreement-with-nasa-for-private-orbital-spaceflight-to-the-international-space-station-iss/) to offer "a variety of personalized space experiences" for its clientele. Think: ISS restaurant bookings and day excursions like star-skiing (kidding, but almost).

__Expanding the galactic biz model...__ Virgin has historically been focused on *suborbital* spaceflight. It sells $250K tickets to send people to the edge of space (and back) on its spaceplane — but even *that* hasn't taken off commercially yet (only [5](https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/22/21298347/virgin-galactic-nasa-private-human-orbital-spaceflight-international-space-station) people have gone for test flights). NASA will review the plan Virgin puts together to see if it's solid, before going ahead with this new venture.

__NASA wants to commercialize space...__ and it needs private sector companies to do it. NASA's on a private hot streak: it recently [completed](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/4rNe8qoYgGWH3zr9vhM8LM/articles/4srz4ZoIYDbhUzLXlyokri) a big launch with __SpaceX__, successfully sending astronauts into orbit with a private spacecraft for the first time ever. Now it wants Virgin's help getting tourists to the ISS.

- __NASA's Goal:__ "Facilitate the commercialization of low-Earth orbit by US entities.” With NASA's support, companies like Virgin Galactic, SpaceX and even __[Boeing](https://robinhood.com/stocks/BA)__ can get a slice of the commercial space pie.
- __One day,__ space tourism could be a major market — and a major money maker for the companies that pioneered it.

__Channeling Bob Ross vibes...__ Start with a blank __Canva__ for your DIY masterpiece. The Sydney-based startup wants to make graphic design accessible to all. Think: *aesthetically pleasing* flyers and social posts for non-design pros. That drag-and-drop attitude just helped Canva nearly [double](https://www.forbes.com/sites/alexkonrad/2020/06/22/canva-new-funding-6-billion-valuation/#33b210461c95) its valuation (it's still private, so we're [SUMO'ing](https://snacks.robinhood.com/newsletters/5wX2eXxCwVWUncZvgfu7NG/articles/32AcWKj6QyG28a5niTqy1E/)):

- __$6B:__ Canva's value after a $60M fundraise, up from $3.2B just nine months ago. Canva can now update its LinkedIn headline to: *Most valuable private tech company in Australia*. And it's profitable.
- __30M:__ Canva's monthly users. Instead of paying for pricey Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions or trying to make a Word Doc look like a poster, millions turn to Canva's free templates. But it's not just college kids making flyers for random student org events...
- __1.5M:__ *Paid* users on Canva Pro. Canva also has paying enterprise customers like __Warner Music__ and __American Airlines__, and around 500K smaller orgs/businesses. That's the premium side of Canva's "freemium" biz model. *Lure them with the "free," monetize them with the "mium."*
- __BTW:__ Professionals-geared __[Adobe](https://robinhood.com/stocks/ADBE)__ just released a free photo editing app to attract the Instagram generation ("Reverse Freemium" move). 

__Collaboration is (extra) key...__ in the corona-conomy. In addition to doubling its monthly user base, Canva saw a 50% jump in *shared* designs over the year. The WFH life increased our reliance on real-time collaboration tools. Canva is planning on using its fresh $$$ to expand its design collab features (and lure in more money-making business accounts).

The number of "taps" your product/company gets is closely related to how nice a post looks. During the pandemic, small businesses have turned to social media to reach customers.
