US stock market will close January 9
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will not open on Thursday, January 9, in observance of the National Day of Mourning honoring former president Jimmy Carter.
Carter — who served as president from 1977 to 1981 — died in Plains, Georgia at 100 years old. The Carter Center in Atlanta announced his death on Sunday.
President Joe Biden announced that January 9, the day of Carter's funeral, would be a National Day of Mourning. It's customary for stock exchanges to close on the day of a former president's funeral; the most recent being George H.W. Bush.
