Nio surges as it debuts another electric SUV to rival Tesla’s Model Y
Chinese EV maker Nio is up more than 10% on Thursday morning after the company unveiled the latest model of its ES8 electric SUV, which has begun presales.
The new ES8 is about 25% cheaper than the older model of the vehicle, selling for ~$58,000. That puts it much closer to Tesla’s Model Y, China’s most popular midsize SUV.
Tesla this week teased a new six-seat version of its Model Y, starting at $47,200. Sales of the vehicle have struggled amid fierce Chinese competition, including from Nio’s Onvo brand (which recently launched a $27,000 three-row SUV).
Nio call volumes have surged to 351,000 as of 11:55 a.m. ET, already far above its full-day average of about 119,000 over the past 20 sessions.
