Money funds have stockpiled over $6 trillion, a new record
The stock market isn’t the only line going up.
Check out the stockpile of cash that’s hiding out in US money-market mutual funds. It hit a new record of $6.67 trillion this week, according to the mutual-fund trade group ICI.
What gives? The stock market is up 23% this year. But as we’ve said repeatedly, stocks look pretty expensive, with price-to-earnings multiples at some of the highest levels since the 1990s dot-com boom and investors barely getting compensated for the risk they take in equities compared to risk-free bonds.
It’s no wonder that some investors are cashing out and socking away their winnings in mutual funds where you can still get 4.5% risk-free, thanks to the strength of the US economy. After all, when Warren Buffett is doing something, it’s worth a thought.
