BeReal, the hottest app of summer 2022, is being acquired for ~$537M

The social media app which gives users a random notification once per day telling them that it’s “⚠️ Time to BeReal. ⚠️” once looked like the poster child of a new generation of stripped-back social media, with its success even spurring Meta to test a similar feature — Candid Stories.

The core mechanic, nudging you to take a dual-camera photo (front and back) of the less glamorous parts of your life, proved popular as an authentic alternative to the carefully curated world of Instagram and others. Indeed, for a few months it looked like BeReal could be the next big thing. Downloads soared, and it grabbed the top spot of a number of app ranking categories per Sensor Tower.

But like so many other social platforms before it, BeReal’s momentum faded. The app slipped down the download rankings and the company was reportedly seeking a buyer in March as its funding ran out. BeReal still has 40 million monthly active users, per TechCrunch.

Paramount and Microsoft’s Activision agree to partner on a “Call of Duty” movie

Less than a month after forming, Paramount Skydance has landed another major piece of intellectual property. The studio said it’s signed a deal with Microsoft’s Activision to create a live-action “Call of Duty” film.

The competitive shooter is one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world and has been the US’s bestselling series for the past 16 years. The next title in the 22-year-old franchise, “Black Ops 7,” will debut in November.

Paramount, which closed its merger with Skydance in August, has had a summer of big deals. It acquired UFC broadcast rights in a $7.7 billion deal with TKO last month, following a $1.5 billion deal for “South Park” rights in July. The company also lured “Stranger Things” creators away from Netflix last month for a four-year film and TV development deal.
