From 2017 to 2022, Uber customers reported incidents of sexual assault or sexual misconduct every 8 minutes in the US
A report by The New York Times found that between 2017 and 2022, more than 400,000 US Uber trips resulted in a report of sexual assault or misconduct.
The reports occurred, on average, about every eight minutes. According to court records seen by the paper, they appear to have increased since 2022.
It’s a damning report for Uber, which hadn’t previously disclosed the scope of the issue. A company spokesperson told the NYT that “about 75% of the... reports were ‘less serious.’”
In July, Uber announced it would begin testing a tool to allow women passengers to specifically request women drivers (or vice versa) in the US this month. Uber said the option would not guarantee a match with a woman driver.
