Peace deal prompts big buying of 2026’s best-performing stocks

Another short-lived threat to the momentum trade in the rearview mirror?

Luke Kawa

The peace deal between the US and Iran has propelled the iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF to a fresh all-time high, as traders eagerly bid up 2026’s best performers.

To be more exact, the risk-on tone has created a barbell trade in US stocks on Monday:

Within the Russell 1000, the stocks doing the best today are the ones that have been crushing it year to date — or the worst-performing 30% of companies.

The threat of an energy price shock and rising bond yields have episodically (and briefly) derailed the momentum trade in stocks. The rally in the Treasury market on Monday implies that there’s a better chance of the macroeconomic environment remaining stable, in which case the old winners can keep on winning.

That’s left AI-geared stocks like Sandisk, Western Digital, Seagate Technology Holdings, Marvell Technology, Intel, Dell, Advanced Micro Devices, and Astera Labs building on their more than 100% year-to-date gains.

SpaceX gets a wave of bullish ratings from Wall Street analysts

SpaceX received more than a dozen positive analyst calls on Tuesday — including from major Wall Street banks — as they initiate coverage on Elon Musk’s space and AI company.

SpaceX went public on June 12 at a $2.2 trillion valuation, the largest debut in history. While the company hasn’t yet posted a profit, it seems to have convinced Wall Street that it will get there and grow its valuation on the way.

Of the at least 17 analysts that gave a rating on Tuesday, all but one gave it a “buy” or “outperform” rating. MoffettNathanson was "neutral."

The ratings come as SpaceX joined the Nasdaq 100 index, a benchmark tech-heavy basket of companies that underpins millions of portfolios. The inclusion adds built-in demand for the stock from index funds and ETFs.

Still, SpaceX fell more than 5% on Tuesday amid a broader sell-off, and is currently effectively flat from its opening price of $150 a share.
