Messy weekend
Happy Friday! We’ve basically made it to the weekend! But if you like your sports weekends clean and orderly, this may not be the one for you. College football’s slate is headlined by Lane Kiffin’s deeply awkward return to Oxford for a Top-10 LSU/Ole Miss showdown, while the NFL rolls into Week 2 coming off the Bills’ demolition of the Lions last night, the WNBA playoff race resumes with statistical oddities galore — see below — NASCAR heads to Bristol (always chaotic), and MLB’s postseason picture remains less than fully resolved. We’ll dig into it all below, along with what we’re watching this weekend:

Stay in your Lane
College football is a messy, messy sport right now — and nowhere will that be more apparent than on Saturday night in Oxford, Mississippi, with No. 7 LSU paying a visit to No. 8 Ole Miss. Such a Top-10 SEC matchup in prime time would always be compelling TV in any normal year, but this particular year’s matchup comes with, um, a LOT of baggage.
In case you haven’t been following it super-closely, LSU coach Lane Kiffin used to coach at Mississippi, transforming them into a national-title contender within the crowded SEC, until he jumped ship for Baton Rouge late last season under circumstances that did not exactly inspire a lot of warm feelings in Oxford. (The Rebels were in the middle of a playoff run!) Now Kiffin is coming back to his old stomping grounds, amidst even more drama than what usually follows him around. There’s all the chaos over player eligibility we’ve covered before, and Ole Miss is literally suing Tigers edge-rusher Princewill Umanmielen for breaching his Rebels contract and transferring to LSU, with Umanmielen getting served court papers outside LSU’s football facility this week.
How high could emotions run on Saturday? Ole Miss has warned students against wearing LSU gear in the student section, while local officials have spent the week discussing extra security arrangements.
The on-field stakes are high, too. Both teams are 2-0 and are ranked in the single-digits. While prediction-market traders think more highly of LSU’s conference-title odds in the SEC than Mississippi’s, both teams have national championship odds at or above 5% and substantial College Football Playoff odds as well:
That potentially makes Saturday’s contest something of an early-season elimination game for the Playoff. It’s not impossible for the loser to go on and still rattle off enough impressive wins to make the CFP — but a loss here certainly doesn’t help the cause. And for LSU, quarterback Sam Leavitt — one of the biggest transfers of the offseason — has gone from doubtful to questionable with an injury, which caused the odds to shift slightly back in the Tigers’ favor at 59%. (Questionable is better than doubtful, in case you were wondering.)
Of course, that’s not the only important game of the weekend. We’ll get to see Heisman Trophy frontrunner Darian Mensah try to build his case further for Miami tonight against Wake Forest, while No. 22 Houston visits No. 13 Texas Tech in a big-time ranked Big 12 matchup. And Saturday brings No. 2 Georgia at Arkansas, Florida State at No. 10 Alabama, and No. 16 SMU at No. 23 Louisville, among others. But all eyes will mainly be on Oxford by Saturday night — where one of the season’s biggest games also doubles as college football’s messiest reunion, bar none.
Blowout Day
As we noted yesterday, the WNBA returned from its nearly three-week hiatus for the FIBA Women’s World Cup last night — and apparently some folks were more ready to be back than others. While the Mercury beat the Fire by only 3 points, every other game was decided by at least 20 points, with three eclipsing a 30-point margin and the Dream beating the Sun by 44, the seventh-most lopsided result in all of WNBA history. Along the way, Angel Reese put up a 30/10 stat line, Rhyne Howard set the single-season 3-pointer record and Jackie Young scored a career-high 35 for the Aces in one of the highest-scoring team games ever (114 points). All of these statistical anomalies added up to a record day for blowout results — among all historical dates with at least 5 WNBA games played, September 17, 2026 now holds the record for highest average margin of victory (26.8), and it’s not even close:
